Q: I was told that I need Reiki Liability Insurance. But, Reiki is beautiful, healing, and all good, right? So why would I need Reiki Insurance?
A: Yes, Reiki is good, helpful, healing, and all of those wonderful and beneficial qualities.
But, you still need to protect yourself if you are offering your services to others. Reiki is doing something. And if you are giving Reiki to another person, it’s possible that there will be legal issues happening behind the scenes.
For instance:
- Are you using a table? A chair? If the client falls off the table, or gets up from the chair, feels dizzy and falls down, you are legally liable for any injuries. Reiki can bring someone to a dizzy or ungrounded state. Do you want to pay for their x-ray if they sustain an injury or need to get something looked at?
- Do you have consent in writing to give the session? If the person shares anything in confidence, you have legal responsibilities. You need some protection for your rights if you have been trusted with any information about the state of someone’s health.
- There are lots of people in this world. We get new clients often. You might not know the person who is new to you. If this person feels unsatisfied in any way, he or she might try to take legal action against you. Whether or not it is justified, you need insurance. Once I had someone try to blame me because she got sick after a Reiki attunement. Although I knew, and told her clearly beforehand, that clearing symptoms could occur, she was making threats against my practice. She didn’t go forward with them, but I was glad that I had insurance to back me up.
- If you work in a spa, health center, wellness center, doctor’s office, or any business location, you will need to be covered by your own insurance.
How much does Reiki Liability Insurance cost and where can I find it?
There are many places online that you can find a company to cover you. Usually a massage insurance company will also offer policies to those in other touch therapies or energy healing practices. Coverage can range from $85-145 a year generally.
I run an online school of intuitive development, Reiki Awakening Academy. Because I have a school, I’ve got a partnership with a really good insurance company. My teachers, myself, and many of my students get insurance through them, and we get a discount. Insurance is just $77/ year.
